– And so people were expelled from paradise for the second time. (Dr. McCoy)
– No, no, this time we left it ourselves. Maybe we’re just not cut out for heaven? Perhaps we were born for struggle, for difficulties, we must pave the way ourselves, clinging to every inch. Apparently, we are not destined to dance to lutes, but to march to drums. (James T. Kirk)
– Poetry, captain, sheer confusion. (Mr. Spock)
“You say almost nothing about Omicron-Network-3, Mister Spock.”. (James T. Kirk)
“I have almost nothing to say about him, captain.”. Except that for the first time in my life I was happy there. (Mr. Spock)
I had a desire to join the origins of space science fiction. And damn! How great is original Star Trek?!
The series was released right in the middle of the space race, three years before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would set foot on the moon. Therefore, it is thoroughly imbued with the optimistic future of our home planet. Two hundred years later, peace and quiet reign on Earth, instead of countries and governments – United Federation of Planets. But this is only a starting point for humanity towards the unknown..
«Space is the final frontier». This is the voyage of the USS Enterprise. Five years of exploration of unknown new worlds, the search for new life and new civilizations. Going where no man has gone before.»
Each episode greets us with these nonukcasinosites.co.uk/high-roller-casino-bonus/ words spoken by Captain James Kirk. Romance, romance of travel. You really feel this pioneering spirit. Although not to the fullest extent, because for us, “people from the future”, many topics, problems, concepts of enemies have long been hackneyed and can hardly surprise. But for the viewer in 1966, all this was new. And realizing this, you are amazed that all these things were already talked about half a century ago.
But the key point is that this is all 1966 – and this means that neither the special effects, nor the scenery, nor the scale of what is happening can please. But they can pleasantly surprise. At least they did it for me, because I expected much worse. This is all quite fun at first. Often you involuntarily say “Seriously? So this is a phaser shot?»or through laughter you watch the awkward staging of the fight scene.
However, the creators knew the limit of their capabilities in this area and /Praise the heavenly warp!/ decided to focus on the characters and their story. There are five main characters: the sarcastic womanizer Dr. Leonard McCoy, who hides his feelings behind an impenetrable wall of logic, the half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock, the proud drinker Scot Montgomery Scott, the badass motherussian Anton Chekhov, and the brave, unwavering idealist Captain James Tiberius Kirk. All of them are played by excellent actors. And in general, the acting in the series is excellent, but those were the old days, they simply couldn’t do it any other way.
In general, the characters here are very colorful, it’s a pleasure to watch their interactions. And how they overcome difficulties… Savvy, logical, courageous.
Talking about difficulties. They are mostly associated with illusions – either a certain creature will turn into a crew member, or under the influence of spores everyone will become happy, or the heroes will have to face perverted copies of themselves, etc. That is, roughly speaking, a person fights with himself, in every sense. And this is incredibly interesting, because the characters are revealed to the fullest.
However, this is just part of the series. On the other side lies what Star Trek is so loved for – new worlds and civilizations. Here I was often sincerely pleasantly surprised by the originality of the writers’ ideas. And it’s not about this notorious makeup or special effects, no. Don’t expect a variety of different life forms. But their thinking, customs and stories… This is where you plunge headlong into this universe.
Star Trek is 80 episodes of a journey through a cardboard galaxy of the Enterprise ship and its crew without spacesuits. With an inevitable moral at the end. Doesn’t sound very attractive. But here are a few reasons why you should watch this series: firstly, it’s just interesting to see how people of the middle of the last century imagined the future, secondly, the story of the Enterprise crew is incredibly exciting, and the characters have unreal charisma, and, most importantly, live and change on the screen, thirdly, it’s a breath of fresh air for those who are tired of the constant pandering to any so-called minorities in the media industry, who want to see normal relationships between the characters, be they men, women or representatives of different nationalities, to see a story where the “damsel in distress” is not associated with something offensively weak, and the presence of a dark-skinned crew member is not stuck out for show, ala “Look, we have them too,” that is, everyone here is human and no one owes anyone.
In general, what I wanted to say? If you are not afraid of the age of the series, if you are interested in science fiction and want to enjoy pleasant characters placed in fascinating events, then feel free to start watching the original Star Trek.
Live Long and Prosper!
PySy Yes, this is the same Star Trek in which all the girls in the crew wore miniskirts..
